Coach Humphrey's Take - Week of September 25, 2007 (from www.ashleyathletics.com)

Last week was a busy week for the Lady Eagles as they were on the road both Tuesday and Thursday. We missed several players, due to illnesses and other issues. It always makes for an interesting match when players are out.

On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles took on Jacksonville. The JV got off to an easy start winning game one 25-13. It was so easy that they went to sleep in game two and lost 10 -25!!! The third and deciding game was a tough battle but the Eagles prevailed 25- 20.
On Thursday, the JV faced New Hanover and took care of business early. They won 25-19 and 25-22.

The Varsity went four games with Jacksonville on Tuesday. Winning 25-23, and 25-21 in the first two games, and then came game three, which has been a mental roadblock for us most of the season, we dropped to Jville 22-25. This set up a 29-27 victory for us in game 4 that started to look a lot like a battle for who DIDN’T want win. Both teams made careless mistakes maybe due to fatigue but the Eagles pushed when they needed to, were mentally tough during an injury play involving two of Jville’s players and walked away with a WIN.

We are happy to report that the Jville player was fine after the match—she and another teammate collided.

Still recovering from an ongoing illness, Sarah Harriss missed practice on Wednesday so the Lady Eagles came out against New Hanover with a different line up on Thursday. The different line up wasn’t as effective as I had hoped, so I tweaked a few things—one was putting Sarah H back in the front row—and things began to happen. Caitlin Blazek stepped up in the back row for Sarah, and Amanda White took over the front row for Jordan Sutton adding a few inches for blocks. Kelsey Hopper had an excellent night with 11 kills and 8 blocks. It was the traditional nail biter that Ashley vs. New Hanover has become in the past few years, going five games. Minutes into game five, we were down 0 – 6, and I became a little worried. As fate would have it, we pushed to tie 7-7 and from then on, it was all Ashley Eagles. Final scores: 22-25 (NH), 25-22 (A), 25- 18 (A), 26-28 (NH) & 15 – 10 (A).

We play at home Tuesday against West Brunswick and Thursday against Hoggard. We hope that you will come and show your support! We would like to thank everyone that contributed to our fundraiser this weekend. Many folks simply gave donations and didn’t even have their car wash.

WE THANK ALL OF YOU!

Hope to see you in the stands this week, Kelly
